Big Brothers Big Sisters of Regina, and satellite agencies in Weyburn and Moose Jaw, work together to ignite the potential of young people through life-changing mentoring relationships. Guided by a shared mission and vision, each agency tailors its programs to meet the unique needs of its community, ensuring funds raised locally stay local to directly support youth in that area. By intentionally recruiting based on community needs, matching young people with professionally screened and trained volunteer mentors, and providing ongoing support, these agencies cultivate Developmental Relationships that express care, challenge growth, provide support, share power, and expand possibilities. Together, they are committed to being leaders in mentoring, empowering youth to develop social-emotional competence, mental wellness, and educational engagement—ultimately enabling them to realize their full potential.

IMPACT

MENTORING CHANGES LIVES

ISSUE

Many young people in our community struggle with societal barriers and face adversities. Facing prolonged adversity creates toxic stress, which can negatively impact the developing brain.

SOLUTION

With the support of a mentor, these risks can be reduced or even avoided, and youth can reach their full potential.

Our Solution

Many children and youth in Canada struggle with societal barriers and face adversities in their lives like detrimental living conditions, family violence, risk factors for mental health, school issues and identity challenges. These circumstances have nothing to do with the value of who they are or who they can become, but because of these situations, children and youth risk not having the opportunity to live up to their full potential. This highlights the need to support our youth and help them make a positive impact on society.

With the guidance and support of a mentor, these risks can be reduced or even avoided, and youth are reminded they can be anything they dream of being.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada is a Federation comprised of 86 member agencies servicing hundreds of communities across the country. Together we mobilize over 17,540 volunteers who in turn mentor 32,000 children and youth.

The Power of Mentorship

Think back to being eight years old. No matter how far some of us may have to reach, we can all remember the feeling of eight. You are full of energy and curiosity. You rely on adults around you for care but you have an insatiable desire to chart a path.

Growing independence meets delicate vulnerability. And at the core is a little person, setting the building blocks of the adult they will one day become. It is an exciting time filled with wonder and opportunity.

Our early years are the most important, foundational moments in developing who we will become. The best lessons—those that set us up for success by giving us confidence to explore and overcome—can only be learned when we have the support of a trusted mentor to guide us.

A Message From Our Executive Director

Every child deserves the opportunity to grow into the best person they can be, regardless of gender and socioeconomic status. We aim to help every child reach their potential through access to mentorship.

A mentor is someone who brings out the best in you, not because they need to, but because they want to. A mentor leads by example, knows how to have fun, and most importantly, creates a genuine friendship with a mentee.

By learning the right life skills, children can grow up to be amazing friends, invaluable employees, and thoughtful community members. This betters our communities as a whole. Leading to a reduction in poverty and unemployment, better academic performance, and more life opportunities.

Every young person that comes through our doors is here to shape their own story. Our staff, volunteers and donors are all committed to making that story the best version of itself. And we hear a lot of stories around here. It’s the story of a young person transforming from shy and hesitant to confident and calculated. It’s the child who experiences a true friendship and finds self worth for the first time. Or it’s the child who discovers a new passion that sparks a level of optimism they didn’t know was possible.

Big Brothers Big Sisters stories hinge on the positive experiences that everyone involved with us brings through our doors. We are forever grateful for our generous donors, passionate staff, and enthusiastic volunteers. You’re the ones that are bringing these stories to life. You’re the ones out there making it possible to make a difference through mentoring. And for that, I thank you.
